STUHL EW1192

The EW 1192 is a lightweight wooden chair—an anonymous yet brilliant everyday product of
the 1960s. With its functional form, surprising comfort, and sturdy construction, it survived the
decline of the east-german chair-making industry in the living rooms and hearts of many
people from the former GDR. For a long time, it could be found at flea markets and in second
hand listings, but not in museums or design publications. Until now.
With the 35-minute documentary film STUHL EW 1192, Mark Michel (director) and TELESKOP
(production) focus on this modest star of GDR design history. The film traces its
transformation from a mass-produced everyday object into a museum piece—and back again,
as a reinterpretation for potential serial production. Following its premiere at the Chemnitz
Industrial Museum, the film is now available on the digital museum platform Voices of
Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.
